The CORE training is a prerequisite to the Mental Health Peer Specialist (MHPS) and Recovery Support Peer Specialist training (RSPS) in Texas.
The Mental Health Peer Specialist (MHPS) credential is designed for individuals who have personally conquered mental health obstacles and wish to engage in peer support work. Certification as an MHPS establishes a set of qualifications for professionals operating in the realm of mental health and/or co-occurring disorders recovery support. MHPS practitioners utilize their own journey of overcoming mental health challenges, alongside expertise gained through formal training, to offer personalized, strength-focused services aimed at fostering recipients' recovery and resilience.
A Peer Specialist Supervisor (PSS) is a professional responsible for offering continuous guidance, support, and supervision to certified peer specialists. Their role encompasses ensuring the effective delivery of recovery-oriented services, fostering skill development, and upholding adherence to organizational policies.

What is the process to becoming a
Certified Mental Health Peer Specialist?
Step One
Frist determine if you qualify to become a Peer Specialist. Complete the attestation for becoming a Peer Specialist. This can be found Here Then print this Atassattion, download, sign and date and save to your file.
It is worthy to note, someone who is justice involved may be barred to become a Certified Peer Specialist. Please check out this link, if you are justice involved.
Step Two
Take and pass the three day CORE Training. The CORE is the training all Peer Specialists must take as they are the basic skills needed
Step Three
Then take and pass the 5 day MHPS Training. This refers specifically to our field of mental health. If you relate more to Substance use, you may consider taking the RSPS Training. We can give you a referral for that training
Step Four
Have your fingerprints done at Identogo for the Full FBI check for Personal uses. Fill out the form at Texas Certifying Board for the MHPS Certificate. Upload your transcripts or GED. Uloid the documents from steps 1-3. Read and assist to the Ethics. Pay for money to become certified.

Step Five
After becoming Certified, your are only certified for six months. During those six months you are to be supervised as you put in 250 hours of direct, face to face work with individuals or in groups. You must keep a log of your direct time and during your supervision, have the supervisor sign off on your hours.
Your organization can bill for your hours while you are getting your 250 Hours
Step Six
If you don't get your 250 hours in tin the first six months, you can request an additional six months to accomplish tis.
Step Seven
Turn in your form indicating the number of supervised hours you have with your Supervisor signing off on these hours.
You will be fully certified for two year.
Step Eight
Frist determine if you qOnce you are fully certified, you will need to continue your ongoing development. You must get 17 hours of Continuing Education Units (CEU') and 3 ho urs of Ethics CEUs. You would obtain a current background check , and provide the assurances you have done this (would need to provide coies if requested) and pay the fee for another two yeaers.

Anna H. Gray
Anna H. Gray, M.Ed., Mental Health Peer Specialists and National Certified Peer Specialist, has worked in the mental health field for 35 years as a houseparent, crisis intervention team captain, emergency room psychiatric assessor, psychotherapist, advocate, Peer Support Specialist, Peer Support Specialist trainer and Peer Support Specialists Supervisor. Most importantly, she uses her ongoing recovery from lived experience of mental health concerns to impact service systems and policy. She is the co-founder of Prosumers International and serves as Executive Director. Prosumers International is a peer run, peer driven service provider dedicated to supporting people in their recovery journey. Prosumers are proactive in their recovery and provide back to their community. She currently co-owns PRO International, a consulting organization that specializes in integrating mental health recovery and peer programs. PRO International also provides training, coaching and professional development services for peers, especially with the flagship program Focus for Life. Gray currently serves on the Texas Behavioral Health Advisory Committee and several sub-committees, and she serves on the Texas Joint Committee on Access and Forensic Services. She represents the voice of lived experience on the PAIMI Council for Disability Rights Texas and served on the Board of the World Federation for Mental Health.
